Perennial herbs with rhizomatous stems.  Rhizomes cylindric to subcylindric, or tubers globose to ellipsoid-globose, straight or curved. Leaves large radical, petiole erect, base sheathing, leaf-blade entire  to deeply lobed at margin. Inflorescence a cymose umbel, involucrate, borne on a scape. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, pedicellate, trimerous. Tepals 6, biseriate, subequal, usually dark-coloured, petaloid, often connate. Stamens 6, 2-cycled, attached to perianth-tube or to base of tepals, filaments short, flat, anthers sessile, 2-celled, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. Carpels 3, syncarpous, 6-ribbed, ovary inferior, unilocular, ovules many, placentation parietal, styles very short, stigmatic branches 3, incurved, stigmas dry, papillate. Fruit a berry or rarely a 3-valved capsule. Seeds many, ovoid-elliptic, longitudinally striate.
